Pedometers Project

Members of the MEF board went to the McGlynn elementary school to visit educator Megan Richard and one of her classes. Ms. Richard had written a grant asking for pedometers to use with all her classes. The third grade class we met with were very excited about showing us the pedometers and the number of steps they had accrued. Then, when the class was nearing the end, the students inserted their pedometer into a device which read their information into a computer program. The teacher was able to read the aggregated data and report to the students that they had surpassed their step count substantially over their previous week despite the absence of two of their classmates. The best part was to come. Ms. Richard showed us a display of bar graphs that were posted on the walls. Different students then went up and explained the bar graphs to us. How did the third graders do in comparison to the other grades? Two classes were neck in neck last week, would one pull ahead this week? The graphs were generated by the computer program and provided the students with information you would normally find in their math class. What a great learning opportunity this teacher provided to her students! Physical education and math all in one! We were so proud that the MEF was able to contribute to this great initiative and support our fantastic educator and her students.
